The average school dropout costs society more than $800,000 over the course of a lifetime. The truant student is at risk for many negative outcomes including educational failure, drug and alcohol abuse, unwanted pregnancy and adult criminality . Truancy is a symptom of deeper issues and it is known that it stems from three areas: school, family and community and student characteristics (www.ojjdp.ncjrs.org/truancy). But knowing the reason behind truancy is not enough to fix the problem. A.I.M. (Attendance Improvement Mediation) shows an 88% success rate in reducing truancy by bringing together the student, parents and school in a neutral setting to discuss the causes of the truancy and to create individualized action plans through the mediation process. A.I.M. creates a collaboration between the family, school and community, which is widely recognized as the three components to a successful truancy intervention program. Mediation
is a voluntary, confidential, non-adversarial process in which an impartial
third party - the mediator - facilitates the conversation between the
participants. With the mediator's help, the school, parents and student
each make decisions about how to address the truancy and underlying issues
causing the absences. Mediation works because parties feel safe
and empowered to discuss the issues causing truancy and to develop
creative and effective action plans to change the behavior. Conflict Solutions, LLC partners with school districts to implement A.I.M. providing training for schools in truancy prevention and the operation of the program. Training is also conducted with volunteers from the school's immediate community who will mediate the cases thus keeping costs low. Consulting is provided throughout the school year to ensure success and a thorough evaluation is done mid-point and at the end of the year. Currently, A.I.M. is running in the following school districts in South Carolina: Lexington/Richland Five, Richland Two, Chester and Berkeley. If you are interested in implementing A.I.M. in your community please contact us as this program can be adapted to any state or locale. Key Benefits
