| "Disruption of Classroom" has become a leading charge reported by schools across the nation. Our courts are filling up with cases involving students who act out in ways that interrupt classroom instruction and create chaos for teachers. The reasons behind the behavior vary including inadequate identification of special education needs, unaddressed mental health issues, family disorganization, and unsafe school environment. CLASS (Communication Leads to Academic and Social Success) is an early-intervention mediation program aimed at working with students as they begin to exhibit a negative pattern of behavior but before it gets to the point of suspension or other more serious measures. Teachers and administrators work together to identify students who might benefit from CLASS and both are included in the mediation process along with parents and the student. Mediation is a voluntary, confidential, non-adversarial process in which a neutral, third party - the mediator - facilitates the conversation by the participants. The CLASS mediator does not make any determinations about the student, family or school but rather helps them to uncover the root causes of the behavior and to develop an individualized action plan to address the behavior.
